How can I apply for an Occupational License or Privilege License to conduct business within the City limits of Hopkinsville?
Any individual, sole proprietor, corporation, partnership or entity that wishes to conduct business within the City of Hopkinsville is required to apply for and obtain an Occupational License prior to the start of business or in the event of a change in the business status.  An Occupational License is required for all rental activities.  If you have any questions about the Occupational License, please contact the Revenue & License Office at: (270) 890-0221.
How can I apply for a Beer and/or Liquor License?
You must first meet City zoning requirements. Unless you are a hotel, motel or restaurant, your establishment must be located in the Downtown Central Business (B-3) District. Hotels, motels, or restaurants can only be located in areas of the City that are zoned for those types of businesses. Any questions concerning zoning can be directed to the Hopkinsville-Christian County Planning Commission at 270-887-4285.

You must file an application with the Office of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) in Frankfort, KY. Applications are available at the City of Hopkinsville Finance Office or can be downloaded from the State’s ABC website at www.abc.ky.gov.

You must be at least 21 years of age.

You must be a US citizen and a resident of Kentucky for the past year unless you apply as a Corporation, LLC or Limited Partnership.

You may not apply if, within the past five (5) years, you have been convicted of any felony; or within the past two (2) years, you have been convicted of any alcohol or controlled substance misdemeanor.

Once you have received a Beer and/or Liquor License from the State, you must go to the City’s Tax and Revenue Office, located on the first floor of the Hopkinsville Municipal Center at 715 South Virginia Street, to purchase a City Beer and/or Liquor License. You will also be required to apply for a City Business License. The application form for a business license can be downloaded here. For additional information concerning local alcohol issues, please check City Ordinance Chapter 111 or call the City’s ABC office at 270-890-0239. Are you hiring for Police/Fire?
Police Officers and Firefighters only, we do not accept applications or resumes until we have a hiring process.  Interested applicants should keep a watch in the Kentucky New Era and/or the City’s website for the next hiring process.  To be eligible for a Police Officer or Firefighter position, an applicant must have a high school diploma or GED, be 21 years of age, be a US Citizen, have a valid driver’s license, and be able to pass a background check.  Applicants with a felony or domestic violence conviction need not apply.

Police Department FAQs

What is the City Ordinance for loud music and vehicles?
It shall be unlawful for the driver of any vehicle to use or operate or cause to be used or operated any engine brake, un-muffled compression brake or mechanical exhaust device designed to aid in the braking or deceleration of any vehicle which results in a noise disturbance, except on limited-access highways. This prohibition shall not apply to personnel of the City who are driving vehicles related to providing emergency services or any driver of a vehicle who is responding to an emergency event.

A noise disturbance means any sound which:

1. Endangers or injures the safety or health of humans or animals;

2. Annoys or disturbs a reasonable person of normal sensitivities; or

3. Endangers or injures personal or real property.

What is the City Ordinance on Fireworks?
Fireworks may only be ignited between the dates of July 1st and July 5th, between the hours of 10:00 A.M. and 12:30 A.M. Fireworks used by individuals under age eighteen (18) must be supervised by a parent or guardian. Ignition within two hundred (200) feet of any structure, vehicle or any other person andigniting or discharging from amotor vehicle or on any property of another without the consent of the property owner is prohibited.

What is the City Ordinance on Leash Laws?
This ordinance is pertaining to the confinement, control, and care of dogs and cats.

Every dog and cat shall be confined to the property of the owner or caretaker, or under immediate effective control either by leash, cord, chain, or other similar physical restraint, or effectively confined within a fenced area on the owner’s premises.

All dogs and cats over the age of four months shall be licensed and registered with the city and county. The licensing and registration shall be in addition to the vet issued rabies tag and must be worn at all times.

The Hopkinsville Police Department can perform this service for a fee of $10.00. You will need to have a photo ID with you.
How can I obtain a copy of a criminal report I filed with police officers?
You may come to the front lobby of the Hopkinsville Police Department located at 101 North Main Street. You must have your photo ID with you to get a copy of your report.
How long does it take before I can pick up a copy of an accident/criminal police report?
Anytime a police officer takes a report, it will take 3 to 5 business days for that report to be ready for you to pick up. However, if your name is not listed on the report you must fill out an Open Records Request form. Fire & EMS FAQs

What are the regulations for open burning inside the city limits?

Is the Ambulance a free service?
No.  The Christian County/Hopkinsville EMS is a fee based service. By law, we have to charge all patients a fee that is allowed by Medicare/Medicaid.

How can I become a Firefighter?
The minimum requirements for applying to the Hopkinsville Fire Department are as follows:

  1. At least 21 years old
  2. High school Diploma/GED
  3. U.S. Citizen
  4. Currently hold a Kentucky EMT License (Paramedic is preferred)
  5. Have a valid Driver’s License
  6. Hold a current CPAT certification. (Candidates Physical Agility Test as required by the State of KY)
  7. Criminal background check
  8. Willing to relocate to within 35 miles of Station #1

Each new hire is required to initially get 400 hours (9 weeks) in our Firefighter Academy.  At this time, we are not offering EMT or Paramedic courses.

Do you send fire trucks with an ambulance on every call?
No. Each call is screened by ECC. On certain types of calls we send extra help. These types of calls include; not breathing, full arrest, diabetic emergencies, just to name a few.  It is our goal to provide the best care possible when we are called.  We do this better when extra help shows up for these calls.

Who provides the ambulance service for Christian County?
The Christian County/Hopkinsville EMS is a service provided to all of Christian County (including Hopkinsville) by an agreement between City and County Government.  It is separate from the Hopkinsville Fire Department, but is run and managed by Hopkinsville Fire Department staff.  This service also includes the ambulance located in Oak Grove.

If your name is listed on the report we can make you a copy at Station #1. Can your crews put a smoke detector in my home?
The Hopkinsville Fire Department sets money aside each year for the purchase of smoke detectors. The detectors go fast, so you will need to call (270) 890-1400 to check on the availability.  If we have detectors, your name and address will be taken and a time set up for us to come install them in your home.  This program is for those who permanently reside in the City limits of Hopkinsville.

Who can I contact regarding youth or adult sports leagues?

If you rent one of our facilities, there is no charge to use our sports equipment. We do not rent tables and chairs.
