Inaugural Hoptown Half & 5K to Donate Over $14K to United Way of the Pennyrile
On the heels of successful first year, race also announces date for second annual event
A high-volume response to post-race surveys has consistently praised the first-ever Hoptown Half Marathon & 5K as one of the top running events of the year.
In addition to that feedback, event organizers are now able to attach another adjective to the race that is more significant than any other: philanthropic.
The Hoptown Half & 5K announced Wednesday that proceeds from the event have been tallied, leading to a donation of $14,131 to the United Way of the Pennyrile. That donation will officially be made during a ceremony in the near future.
The inaugural joint road race will also donate $1,000 to the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association — a group that was flexible in moving the date of its annual Alzheimer’s Walk in order to accommodate the Planters Bank Hoptown Half Marathon and Jennie Stuart Health Hoptown 5K races.
“When we started planning the Hoptown Half & 5K earlier this year, and after we chose our charitable beneficiary, our committee had big goals to not only create a positive experience for our participants, but also to raise some substantial dollars for our three-county United Way agencies,” said Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation Superintendent Tab Brockman. “With the final numbers tabulated, we are beyond pleased with the results.”
On the heels of a successful first year, the Hoptown Half & 5K planning committee has also set a future date for the races. The second-annual version of the event will be held Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The pre-race Expo will return to Planters Bank-Jennie Stuart Health Sportsplex the day before.
Next year’s Hoptown Half Marathon will also be one of three 13.1-mile opportunities within a soon-to-be-named western Kentucky tri-race series, joining the David Taylor Chrysler Murray Half Marathon and the Mercy Health Iron Mom Half Marathon in Paducah for a unique race experience.
