Local Foods, Local Places Workshop to be Held in Hopkinsville April 25th & 26th

The Local Development Corporation, Community and Development Services, the Inner-City Residential Enterprise Zone (ICREZ) and the Downtown Renaissance District are hosting a two-day community workshop on the topic of local foods and its potential for strengthening our local economy, supporting healthier people and neighborhoods, and revitalizing our downtown.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), US Department of Agriculture (USDA), US Department of Transportation (DOT), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), and Delta Regional Authority (DRA) have selected Hopkinsville for the Local Foods, Local Places technical assistance program, which will result in an action plan for strengthening our local food economy. 

A team of these agency partners and their consultants will join local stakeholders to conduct a workshop in Hopkinsville on April 25 and 26. The workshop will bring together many key stakeholders from throughout our region to develop an action plan primarily around, but not limited to, these goal areas:

  • Create a community council or alliance to connect and coordinate various projects in Hopkinsville's local foods, health, community arts, economic development, and downtown revitalization networks.
  • Secure new vendors for the Hopkinsville Downtown Farmers Market and attract new customers through the availability of a wider variety of produce and other local products.
  • Enhance community health by improving access to local and healthy food, increasing walkability, and building upon classes and workshops offered by local agencies.
  • Support opportunities for the incubation of farms and small businesses in Hopkinsville, especially those using local foods and products.
  • Activate and energize the Hopkinsville downtown and inner-city areas and fully integrate residents into activities and opportunities. 

The workshop will include presentations on community livability and the roles that local foods play in supporting it, plus small group working sessions and discussions on the community’s vision and goals, and specific actions for reaching them. The workshop sets the stage for developing the community’s action plan for moving forward.

  • Day 2 Action Planning Work Sessions: Wednesday, April 26, Christian County Cooperative Extension Service, 2850 Pembroke Road, Hopkinsville, KY  42240. Morning Session: 9AM-12PM; Afternoon Session: 1-4PM.

Local Foods, Local Places has helped communities revitalize main streets and other neighborhoods through the development of local food systems.  Through Local Foods, Local Places, partner communities have worked on projects such as:

  • Opening year-round, downtown markets featuring foods from local farmers.
  • Planning cooperative grocery stores to help revitalize small-town main streets.
  • Creating centrally located community kitchens or food hubs to aggregate and market local foods.
  • Starting business incubators to help entrepreneurs launch food-related businesses on main streets.
  • Developing community gardens and making it easier for people to access farmers markets and local restaurants.
