A grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting will be held for Hopkinsville Greenway System’s rail trail on Saturday, September 27 at the North Drive Trailhead.  Participants may begin registration for prize drawings and a free Mayor’s Fun Walk/Ride at 8:30 a.m. followed by the ceremony at 9:00 a.m.  Limited parking is available at the North Drive Trailhead.  Additional parking is available at Agri-Chem’s parking lot (at North Drive and Little River Bridge opposite the trailhead).

In celebration of the historic completion of phase one of the project, enjoy a self-guided walk/ride along the rail trail.  During your stroll, get your passport stamped at a variety of interactive, healthy lifestyle booths hosted by local businesses and organizations.  Also, enter to win great door prizes including two new youth bicycles, gift certificates valued at $180 for two Christian County Family YMCA membership joining fees, two 2015 Tie Breaker Family Aquatic Center season tickets worth $108, and two Hopkinsville Farmer’s Market worth $25 each.  Drawings for the prizes will be directly following the ribbon cutting.

“Hopkinsville’s rail trail offers beautiful places for walkers, runners, bikers, and outdoor-lovers of all ages to explore and enjoy nature," said Hopkinsville Mayor Dan Kemp.  “We also see the trail as a pathway to more healthy lifestyles.”  In addition to outdoor recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, the multiuse rail trail system provides non-motorized pathways and neighborhood connectivity from the heart of downtown to many local streets and sidewalks.

Open year-round from dawn to dusk and measuring approximately 5K or just over three miles, phase one of the rail trail project was made possible by contributions from private businesses and citizens and budget allocations by Hopkinsville City Council.

Thanks to the generosity of over 100 donors including private businesses, public partners, and individual citizens, the group’s efforts have yielded over $344,102 in funds pledged, an increase of $35,866 and some 40 additional donors over the last year.
