The free 15th Annual Turkey Trot 5K (3.1 miles) run/walk returns at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving (November 24) in downtown Hopkinsville. The non-competitive, non-timed event begins and ends in downtown Hopkinsville, via a route that includes a large section of the community’s popular Greenway Rail Trail. The Turkey Trot is presented by Hopkinsville’s Division of Parks and Recreation, along with 30 additional sponsors.
No race registration fee will be charged, but proceeds from the sale of popular long sleeve Turkey Trot shirts ($20) will benefit the Greenway Rail Trail. Participants can only get their t-shirt, correct size, and easy event registration by following advance Turkey Trot sign-up instructions at the Parks and Recreation’s new registration site, www.hoptownrec.com. Please note the cutoff date for registering online and for ordering a t-shirt online will be November 15, 2016.
The Turkey Trot has become a Hoptown Thanksgiving Day tradition that’s open to runners, walkers, skaters or cyclists young and seasoned. Pets are welcome on leash. Last year, approximately 750 “turkey trotters” took to the streets and Greenway. Organizers hope to top that number this year as the event has continued to gain popularity. Holiday outfits are welcome and a pre-race costume contest will be held at approximately 7:45 a.m.
Participants are encouraged to arrive at Founders Square by 7:30 a.m. if registering that morning. Waivers need to be signed prior to the race, either online in advance, or on event day.
Coffee and hot tea will be available at sign-in, courtesy of the Christian County Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Pennyrile Hospitality Association.
The Turkey Trot is held to benefit the Greenway Rail Trail through the City of Hopkinsville. Outside donations for upkeep and maintenance of the rail trail are gladly accepted, with checks made payable to the City of Hopkinsville, indicating Rail Trail Donation on the memo line.
