Registration is now open for the 17th Annual Turkey Trot — a free fun run/walk 5K — scheduled for 8 a.m. Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 22 in downtown Hopkinsville.

An annual family-oriented tradition, the Turkey Trot is Hoptown’s longest-running road race and holiday social gathering is open to walkers, runners, joggers, skaters and bikers of all ages and paces. Dogs (on leashes) are even welcome to participate with their owners in the 3.1-mile event, which will start and end downtown.

“The ever-growing response to and anticipation of this event in Hopkinsville speaks to this community’s desire to be active within family-friendly social activities and events,” said Hopkinsville Parks & Recreation Superintendent Tab Brockman. “We are thrilled with how the Turkey Trot has grown over the years and are certain that the 2018 edition is going to be our biggest and best yet.”

The Turkey Trot, which is a non-competitive, non-timed race, does not include a registration fee, but participants are encouraged to register by Nov. 17. Those who pre-register for the event will be able to fill out the required waiver form and skip the registration line the morning of the race. Online registration also guarantees an opportunity to purchase a long-sleeve Turkey Trot T-shirt for $20, with all proceeds going to the Hopkinsville Greenway.

During the previous 16 years of the Trot, the event has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the rail trail — an area that acts as the backdrop for a portion of the race route along the course.

Last year’s Trot drew over 1,000 people downtown. Due to the growing crowds, attendees are encouraged to arrive at Founders Square at 7:30 a.m. before being escorted to the start line.
