With a goal of attracting more folks to downtown Hopkinsville, the new Fridays@5/Sounds on the Square event debuts on Friday, June 24. Several community groups are working together to help promote this new downtown event. The Gil Gann Trio will entertain with jazz music from 5-9 p.m. on Founders Square. Food and beverage will be available for purchase, with a portion of the adult beverage sales benefitting the Pennyroyal Arts Council.
The new Hopkinsville Young Professionals group – HYPE – is also participating in this Fridays@5, along with the Downtown Renaissance Program.
“The idea for Fridays@5 began over the winter with conversations between Parks and Rec and Downtown Renaissance for additional collaborative events,” said Park and Recreation Superintendent, Tab Brockman. “Our new Fridays@5 series follows the successful lead of many other communities hosting similar events. One of the goals with this event starting a series that brings more folks downtown after normal business hours.”
Downtown Renaissance Director, Holly Boggess, agreed and is also looking forward to next Friday.
“The Downtown Renaissance is very excited to partner with the organizations involved in bringing ‘Fridays @5/Sounds on the Square’ to the heart of downtown Hopkinsville. We look forward to the continued enhancement and expansion of quality events that promote the Downtown Renaissance District as our community’s hot spot for arts, entertainment, and cultural activities,” said Boggess.
The HYPE group sees the Fridays@5 as another way to make a difference in Hopkinsville, according to HYPE’s Sarah Whitaker.
“I’m so happy to see a new event launch that is focused on the fun to be had in Downtown Hopkinsville. The Hopkinsville Young Professionals Engage group is looking forward to welcoming this new event by having Fridays@5 be the backdrop for our HYPE June social event,” Whitaker said.
In addition to the upcoming event, an additional Fridays@5 is planned for Friday, July 22 when classic rockers, Southern Dirt, will provide the entertainment. The upcoming Summer Salute festival will provide the August edition of Fridays@5 when the Jimmy Church Review entertains on the opening night of the new two-day festival, August 26. If demand warrants, organizers will consider adding a September Fridays@5 date.
“We are excited to launch this new opportunity to bring live music to downtown Hopkinsville. This is part of our ongoing strategy to revitalize downtown and give our residents and visitors even more reasons to be proud of our community. I hope to see you there,” added Mayor Carter Hendricks.
