Popular country music superstars, Diamond Rio, will be the Saturday night headliner for Hopkinsville’s newest festival – Summer Salute, presented by Jennie Stuart Health – it was announced today at a downtown press conference. Diamond Rio is a six-time CMA and ACM Vocal Group of the Year and has charted 22 Top 10 Singles over 27 years of entertaining.
The August 26-27 Summer Salute in downtown Hopkinsville will also welcome the legendary Jimmy Church Band as Friday night’s featured entertainment. The immensely talented JCB will offer everything from the Platters, to Earth, Wind and Fire, to Taylor Swift as the 10-piece group spans decades of music behind seasoned, charismatic front man, Jimmy Church.
In addition to the musical announcement, Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation officials unveiled a chock-full schedule of events for both days of Summer Salute, presented by Jennie Stuart Health.
“We know Diamond Rio and The Jimmy Church Band both mean great music and lots of fun. But, it’s hard to call any one other thing a highlight because there is so much planned with the festival,” admitted Tab Brockman, Parks and Rec Superintendent. “There’s literally something for about everyone – and all the entertainment and activities are free. We want to thank Jennie Stuart Health and all of our additional sponsors for helping make this new festival a first-class event for Hopkinsville, the Pennyrile, and the Ken-Tenn region.”
Friday starts with a school field trip for regional middle schoolers to see a 10:30 a.m. BMX stunt team show from Dialed Action Sports. The morning show features a prominent and timely “anti-bullying” message as part of the three-man daredevil stunts. The BMX Show is sponsored by Max Arnold & Sons, HWEA and H&R Agri-Power. Dialed Action will have two more stunt shows later Friday evening when the festival hits full stride.
Summer Salute will have two Kids Zones full of inflatables at the east and west ends of the festival, a Splash Zone with water slides near Little River Park, and a Fun Zone with carnival rides for kids 6-under at Bethel and Ninth Streets. The Kids and Splash Zones are sponsored by Toyota of Hopkinsville. The Fun Zone is made possible by Pennyrile Electric.
Festival vendor response has been outstanding and food, merchandise, sponsor booths will open at 10:00 a.m. A limited number of general merchandise vendor spots are available. A waiting list is in place for food vendors.
The next installment of the popular Fridays@5 Series will begin with the BMX Stunt Show and then will be followed by Nashville’s ever-popular Jimmy Church Band, sponsored by Casey’s General Store, at 6:00 p.m. at Founders Square. Jimmy Church has been entertaining at social events around the country for years (www.thejimmychurchband.com). The 10-piece group appeals to all crowds and was voted the #1 Wedding Reception Band in the U.S. by Vogue magazine.
Friday night will also include a special Cruise-In from Top Gun Car Shows starting at five o’clock in the Justice Center parking lot. The night will be capped off with fireworks at 9:30, sponsored by Budweiser of Hopkinsville.
Saturday’s schedule retains many of the same offerings, yet expands with the annual Chamber Military Affairs Committee Chili Cook-Off at Founders Square. Cooking teams from throughout the community, Fort Campbell and region will battle for bragging rights in this popular event that caps the Chamber of Commerce Military Salute Week. For more Cook-Off info, visit the Chamber website at www.christiancountychamber.com or call the Chamber at 270-885-9096.
A new Art Zone on 6th and Main Streets will offer free children’s art activities sponsored by the Hopkinsville Art Guild, open studio painting at Griffins Studio, lunch specials from The Place and classic movies at the historic Alhambra Theatre. Local artisans will be displaying and selling their artwork - all with a Kids Zone and food truck! To take part in the Arts Zone, call the Pennyroyal Arts Council at 270-887-4295.
Vendors welcome visitors starting at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday and the Jennie Stuart 5K begins and ends downtown with an 8:30 start. The Top Gun Classic Car Show is expecting over 200 cars for their judged show that will fill up the Justice Center parking lot and much of Main St. The same Fun, Splash and Kids Zones will be in place from 9:00 a.m. till close on Saturday. Plus, the Fort Campbell Band will perform at Founders Square at 2:00 p.m. as part of the Chili Cook-Off fun.
On top of all of this, Downtown Train rides are happening throughout the festival around downtown blocks. The community train is made possible with sponsorship from Heritage Bank.
At 5:00 p.m. the car show will sweep out of the Justice Center lot and the area will be configured to host country music’s Diamond Rio (www.diamondrio.com). The big festival stage will be in front of the Justice Center facing east to turn the parking lot into a country music celebration.
Bring your blankets and lawn chairs as the six members of Diamond Rio offer up their five No. 1 Singles and much more in a night Hoptown music lovers won’t soon forget. With more than 10 million albums sold, the Grammy and Dove Award winners will fill the downtown with hits until the Summer Salute wraps up by 10 p.m.
