Phases

In over 35 years of building more than
2,000 playgrounds, Project
Playground consultants from Leathers &
Associates have learned that a
playground built by the community is well cared for! Playgrounds
that
children design and teenagers, parents, seniors, and the community
build
create a strong sense of community pride and ownership, which
naturally
leads to better upkeep and fewer instances of vandalism.
Phase I: Design Phase
meetings with children, parents, playground committee members, and other
interested community members. To allow for the greater level of
participation in our community, apprentice designers interviewed
students from these local schools to see what they wanted in their
playground.

age-appropriate areas to engage in fine-motor skill play as well as
gross-motor skill play and imaginative play. Also, special consideration
will be given to accessibility needs and the ADA guidelines. To optimize
the amount of local history and architecture incorporated into the
project, our treasured clock tower and several local storefronts have
been included in the design.
Design Day evening, we held a community-wide celebration where the
designer unveiled the preliminary drawing and outlined the building
process to come.
Phase II: Organization Phase
continued with organization of the remaining project. Important facets
of this work include enlisting folks to lend tools, donate funds and
materials, and volunteer to help during the build. Each of these
efforts is crucial to ensure our team is properly prepared for
playground construction.
Phase III: Construction Phase
consultants will work on-site with us and our enthusiastic volunteers of
various skill levels to transform an empty patch of ground into
something magnificent: our own community-designed and community-built
project. It is important to note that all designs meet current
standards and guidelines set forth by ASTM International, CPSC (Consumer
Product Safety Commission), and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Ten
to 15 community members will serve as captains responsible for assigning
groups of people (both skilled and unskilled) to work on specific
components of the project and then ensuring quality control on the work
performed. The construction consultants will advise the captains
throughout the build. Together, the consultants and captains (including
a safety captain) ensure that the site is safe.
Phase IV: Post Construction
Hopkinsville families will have a one-of-a-kind place to enjoy for yearsto come. In fact, our community-built structure should last at least 25
years with proper maintenance.
