Hopkinsville Transit Celebrates 5th Year of Service with 5 New Passenger Shelters and 2 New Stops

Hopkinsville Transit officials announced having a lot to celebrate as the system’s fifth year of service begins.  First, just in time to offer more protection from winter weather, Hopkinsville Transit passengers will enjoy new transit shelters at each of the following five stops:

  • Hopkinsville Community College
  • N Elm St @ Means Av (stop location has been adjusted to Elm St from Means Av)
  • Liberty St/Salvation Army
  • W 9th St @ Public Library
  • W 17th Street (new stop across from Jennie Stuart Health)
Shelters feature four-sided protection from the elements, seating, motion-censored lighting, large print schedules, and advertising panels.  Thanks to a continued partnership with Pennyrile Allied Community Services, another nine shelters are scheduled to be erected this year.  To commemorate installation of the new amenities, a ribbon cutting will be held at the Hopkinsville Community College transit shelter in front of the Auditorium Building on Talbert Drive on Thursday, January 17 at 4pm.  Transit supporters are invited to check out the new digs and enjoy a Hopkinsville Transit mug full of hot cocoa while supplies last.

Also, effective today, Hopkinsville Transit riders may take advantage of two new stops.  One is a “by request only” stop at the Hopkinsville Sportsplex.  This means that riders interested in travelling to or being picked up from the Sportsplex would simply need to let the driver know as they board or call dispatch at (270) 890-6055 to be picked up.  The second new stop at West 17th Street between High and Canton Streets will complement with the transit system’s second most popular stop at Jennie Stuart Health.  Due to the significant ridership and the desire to remain customer-focused, Hopkinsville Transit will continue to service the existing Jennie Stuart Health stop, which had over 1,600 drop-offs and pick-ups each in 2018.

Indeed, ridership was up throughout Hopkinsville Transit’s service area with the system delivering a record 49,307 rides in 2018, an increase of 2,598 rides or 5.56% over 2017.

Hopkinsville Transit operates Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and features extremely affordable regular fares of only $1 each way with a free transfer.  Hopkinsville Transit also offers discounted fares $0.50 for students, seniors, military and the disabled, as well as deeply discounted $5 weekly passes and $15 monthly passes.
