Children's Books Needed for Local Book Drive

Many of our area's children who accompany their parents to service offices and other public agencies have limited or no exposure to appropriate reading materials.  The Christian County Literacy Council is continuing to partner with the Community Early Childhood Council, Leadership Hopkinsville, and other citizens to offer new and gently-read books for these families to read while waiting in often-crowded facilities.  Families are welcome to keep the books, too!
In 2014, 933 books were placed in 16 local agencies including WIC, Public Housing Authority, Christian County Jail (yes, children often accompany adults who visit those who are incarcerated), Boys & Girls Clubs, CC Health Department, CC Courthouse Lobby.
Thanks to Pierian Book Club and the local chapter of DAR, we have received hundreds of adult fiction/non- fiction titles to shelve with the books for the children who need to see their parents reading: "Children are made Readers on the laps of their parents."
This plea however, is for CHILDREN'S BOOKS.  Perhaps your children, grandchildren, neighbor children are ready to part with books outgrown; is an over-loaded bookcase begging for extra room for those new books I hope your little ones received for Christmas?
If you and yours have new or gently-read children's books to donate to this ongoing project, please call the Literacy Council Office, 270-962-7114 or 886-8308 to arrange for a collection.  The Literacy Council office is on the second floor of the beautiful and historic CC Courthouse on Main Street, and you are welcome to ride the smooth elevator for a visit. The council is a non-profit 501-c3 agency and happily will provide you with a receipt.
