Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program Vouchers Available at the Hopkinsville Housing Authority

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) increases access to fresh, local produce at the Downtown Farmers Market in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.  The Food Distribution Branch of the KDA has made over six thousand dollars’ worth of food instruments, or purchase vouchers, available to Senior Citizens of Christian County.  The vouchers are distributed in packets of $28 per Senior, and may only be used at the Downtown Farmers Market.

To be eligible for receiving the vouchers, Senior Citizens must be 60 years of age or older, must be a resident of Christian County, and must comply with income restrictions based upon 130% of the Federal Poverty Level.  The table below demonstrates income eligibility guidelines:

Through a partnership with the Housing Authority of Hopkinsville, the vouchers are being distributed each Tuesday and Thursday until the supply is depleted.  Applications are accepted each Tuesday and Thursday at the Housing Authority’s Administrative Building, located at 400 North Elm Street between 9 AM and 12 PM.  If applying for the program, you must provide proof of age, income and residency.  Any questions regarding required information may be addressed to Beverly at 270.887.4285 extension 1102.

Vouchers may be used to purchase locally grown produce and locally grown fresh cut cooking herbs.  Medicinal herbs such as aloe, lamb’s ear, catnip, rue, bee balm, white sage, lavender, echinacea, chamomile and St. John’s Wort are not eligible purchases.  Vouchers may be redeemed now through October 25, 2015.

The Downtown Farmers Market is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7 AM until 1 PM and is located in Founders Square at the corner of 9th & Main in Downtown Hopkinsville.  EBT and Debit cards are also accepted.
