20th Annual Turkey Trot returns to Downtown Hopkinsville

5K Registration open for annual holiday trot

Registration online is now open for Hoptown’s favorite Thanksgiving Day social event and exercise routine. The run/walk 5K returns to the Main Street starting line in front of Ferrell’s Restaurant at 8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 25. Race participants will be huffin’ and puffin’ for some stuffin’ at the 20th Annual Hopkinsville Turkey Trot.

Walkers, runners, joggers, skaters, bikers and even dogs (on leashes) of all ages and paces are welcome to take on the 3.1-mile race that starts and ends on the Rail Trail by the library. Race participants are requested to register online prior to the event even if they are not purchasing a race shirt. The event has grown to attract 1,200-1,500 participants, a far cry from the six friends that started the event 20 years ago. For those that wish to avoid crowds, there will be an auxiliary route that begins at the Hopkinsville Dog Park on Pardue Lane, heads to the Foston Chapel trailhead and back.

The Turkey Trot, which is a non-competitive, non-timed race, will be free for all participants as usual. This year, runners/walkers will have an opportunity to purchase a souvenir race shirt for $25. Proceeds from the shirts will benefit the Hopkinsville Greenway Rail Trail. The deadline to register for race shirts is Nov. 14.

“Turkey Trot gives members of our community a way to reconnect and engage in a family-oriented, fitness-based activity, this holiday season,” said Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation Superintendent Tab Brockman.

A costume contest coincides with the event with two divisions, children and adults. Winners of the contest will receive a frozen turkey sponsored by Holly Hampton of Town & Country Realty. Online registration is available at
